Regardless of the industry you choose to work in, you will find spreadsheets, especially those created in Microsoft Excel, help run the business. Excel is used for inventory control, finance, accounting, data analysis, tracking, contact management, and believe it or not, can be used with Adobe Photoshop to create variable data imagery. Understanding and using Excel will make you a valuable employee in any industry.

Many people believe Excel is only for accounting and number crunching, however, it is an extremely powerful program that has several uses for everyday life. Excel is built to organize anything from a grocery list to planning a wedding. It has features that allow you to create art or databases for tracking. Sure, Excel is an excellent program for numbers, but as you will learn throughout this exercise, it is much more than meets the eye.
At times during your career, you may be given an Excel spreadsheet with data already in it for you to manipulate or update. Other times, you will be expected to create your own Excel spreadsheet from scratch with only raw data provided. When you open Excel to begin to create your own spreadsheet, you will actually be creating what is called a workbook in Excel. To create a workbook, do the following:

Make sure to save as you go so that you do not risk losing any of the progress you make as you enter data into your workbook. Another great skill to know how to do in Excel is auto-filling your data when possible like below. Notice that in order to use this feature, your data needs to be a series like the months of the year, the day of the week or years.
