What local, state, or federal organizations do you belong to (or plan to belong to) and what is/are their importance in bringing change? (not just health related)
I belong to the American Association of Nurse Practitioner (AANP). This organization empower its members and bringing their voices to Capitol Hill through advocacy, reaching out to congress members and lobbying for issues that matters, especially in healthcare. AANP efforts help fuel changes such as Veterans Affairs (VA) to get treatments from the Nurse Practitioner (NPs) in 2016 (AANP). The national battle for the NPs Full Practice Act (FPA) , which California has become the newest member of the states to win the FPA this year is also part of AANP’s activities for change. How have organizations in nursing/medicine demonstrated a change in practice by taking action on an issue?
As society evolves, the healthcare system landscape changes with it. The policy makers and healthcare organizations seek innovative ways to match the evolution. AANP, with the largest professional members, takes action by urging state governors to accept the proposed recommendation such as NP FPA (AANP, 2020). They held conferences held throughout the nation and sent representatives to congress and urge its members to call or write letters states representatives on a given issue. They also advise its member on how to vote on issues concerning health delivery and patient care such as the Affordable Care Act and Home Health Services issues.
What could you as a Nurse Practitioner do to change the course of health care in this country? Explain its importance.
The affordable Care Act introduced in 2010 predicted the need for new roles in healthcare system as the society evolves and part of the expanding role is the nurse practitioner (IOM,2011). As a nurse practitioner, is essential to join an active and vibrant organization such as AANP to help advocate to bring the transformation to practice. Through AANP, members are informed on issues at hand through conferences and smart brief. Example, the recent California NP FPA is made possible by AANP actions and persistent demand for the change. AANP member are provided with numbers to call their state representative and/or template to write their Governor. PLEASE RESPOND TO THIS POST
